What is the duty which God requireth of man?

Hath God revealed his will?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: He hath showed his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel, (Psalm 147:19)

Hath he revealed it plainly?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: So that he may run which readeth it, (Habakkuk 2:2)

And fully?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God, (Acts 20:27)

Should we therefore seek to be acquainted with it?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: Lead me in thy truth and teach me, (Psalm 25:5)

Is obedience to God’s revealed will a duty?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: And now, O Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to walk in his ways, (Deuteronomy 10:12)

Is it the duty of all?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: Give ear all ye inhabitants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor, (Psalm 49:1–2)

But especially of the redeemed?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: Ye are bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s, (1 Corinthians 6:20)

And is it their whole duty?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: Let us hear the conclusion of the matter, fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man, (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

Is it reasonable that God should be obeyed?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: It is our reasonable service, (Romans 12:1)

Is obedience due to him as our Creator?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: Thou art my servant, I have formed thee, (Isaiah 44:21)

And as our preserver?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: Is he not thy Father that hath bought thee, hath he not made and established thee, (Deuteronomy 32:6)

And as our Master?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: If I be a Master, where is my fear? (Malachi 1:6)

And as our Sovereign?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn unto the Lord, for the kingdom is the Lord’s, (Psalm 22:27–28)

Should God’s commands therefore take place of men’s?

Answer: Yes.

Proof: Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you, more than unto God, judge ye, (Acts 4:19)
